There was a big shakeup in the online advertising world last weekend: Google cut off AppNexus from its ad exchange, forcing the startup to direct its clients to purchase ad inventory directly from Google. The move comes only a few weeks after AppNexus raised a huge $50 million round, which included a big chunk from Microsoft.

The agencies have built up very strong media planning and buying teams to buy content, sponsorships and site integrations, etc… But they haven’t developed a lot of expertise in buying audiences. That’s what we’ve done well and we recognized quickly that as we’ve started expanding how we access inventory from the sell side, we’ve added RTB as part of our capabilities. We started real-time buying across a high quality system of publishers. But it’s just new technology, ways to acquire audiences that our advertisers want.

But Microsoft now appears to be gaining traction in the exchange-traded display arena. Its recent moves include the integration of real-time ad buying in earnest, a $50 million investment in real-time display platform AppNexus, the creation of a mobile ad exchange, and the use of exchange-traded media to supplement standard display buys on the Microsoft Media Network.

I’m super excited to announce that, as of today, we’ve closed on a $50M Series C funding. We’ve raised this round from existing investors and one of our key strategic clients, Microsoft. I think this is a great validation not just of the company, but also of the real-time bidding (RTB) space in general.

For example, say a man just searched for golf clubs on eBay (which has been testing a system from a company called AppNexus for more than a year). EBay can essentially follow that person’s activities in real time, deciding when and where to show him near-personalized ads for golf clubs throughout the Web. If eBay finds out that he bought a driver at another site, it can update the ad immediately to start showing him tees, golf balls or a package vacation to St. Andrew’s, Scotland, often called the home of golf. If a woman was shopping, eBay could change the ad’s color or presentation.

The New York-based startup is among several players that aim to help ad buyers interact with the growing clout of ad exchanges. Executives who helped build two of the largest of such exchanges — the Right Media platform used by Yahoo and the DoubleClick Ad Exchange owned by Google — lead AppNexus.
