Foursquare turned down an acquisition offer of $140 million – tech gossipers believe the potential purchaser was either Facebook or Yahoo. The offer came when Foursquare had only had raised $1.35 million in seed funding and before a $20 million round in October, with venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz joining existing investors O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures and Union Square Ventures. At the time the company was valued at $95 million, had more than 2 million users and was averaging 10,000 signups daily.

« We feel like location-based networks are going to be the next big thing, » said Noah Vadnai, VP of VH1 Mobile. The network is targeting consumers on a regional basis with the program, said Stephanie Werner, VP of VH1 promotions and partnerships. « This is a perfect fit [for us] because we’re going to get the word out there about great music and what’s happening at local venues, » she said.

Only 4% of the adult, Internet using population has used any kind of location-based service, and just 1% of all adults check into a location at least once a week. By contrast, more than 11% of online adults have used Twitter, and an estimated 28% of all Internet users have signed up for Facebook
